Tuesday: Students will practice new vocabulary by themselves for five minutes, five minutes with a partner, and then take a practice quiz. Those who score 100 percent will receive a Rambler Pride Card and be able to opt out of vocabulary practice and complete enrichment activities each day. Teacher will be on a field trip so sub will display teacher's notes from SS7H2 in
Chapters 21 and 22 on Smartboard for students to add to their own notes.

Friday: We will read a non-fiction story together based on Middle East subjects taken from the Junior Scholastic magazine. Most classes will complete interactive text activities with partners or in a small group.

Closing: Each day we will watch CNN Student News and discuss current events as time allows.

ELT: Students are able to reassess during Extended Learning Time (ELT) and before school. If a student fails a test a sticker/stamp is placed on test asking for a parent signature and listing the date any reassessment must be completed by (please see Reassessment Form and contact me for any additional information). Students must complete with 100 percent accuracy any prior Progress Monitoring assignments and the failed test in order to reassess within the two-week window. Please visit the Running Record page to see list of assignments/dates leading up to any particular test.

During ELT we will be studying economics/personal finance by playing a stock market game.

Assessments/Differentiation: Students will complete several assessments/checks for understanding throughout the week on vocabulary and new information as it is presented. This information will then be used to determine what information needs more practice and which students will be placed in a review group to work directly with teacher to receive individual attention/partnered practice/small groupings to increase comprehension, understanding and hopefully retention. Low test scores correlate to the amount of time necessary for study; what we are able to do in class may not be enough and should be adjusted accordingly. Materials used in class are found on this website and books may be borrowed each night to use at home. Please contact me if I can assist in any way.

Sept. 21 - 25, 2015

Week 7:
Teacher’s note: Last week I used chapter questions we answered as we read the text and took notes together as progress monitoring grades. The questions are created from information just covered in the book (three to four paragraphs usually.) Students were able to look back in the text for the answers. A 4 = 90 - 100 percent; 3 = 80 - 89 percent; 2 = 70 - 79 percent; and 1 = 69 percent or less. This information was then used to create the weekly test, and I noticed the expected correlation between progress monitoring scores and test scores.
To differentiate instruction this week, students who do not get 80 percent or greater when answering the questions will do them again the following day and I will be working with them individually as they do so. Hopefully we will see an improvement and an increase in test scores. Those who do well can use that class time to finish a
crossword puzzle created from new material that will be due Thursday.

Greetings: Last week we played some “getting to know you” games and applied for jobs related to a Stock Market game we will be playing during Extended Learning Time (ELT) each week. I also discussed the Remind code to receive text message reminders (or email reminders) about upcoming due dates. Many students are familiar with this and many parents like to join as well. To do so please follow directions on this sheet:

http://www.ramblerweblog.com/chrisconley/wp-content/uploads/sites/87/2015/08/Remind-Directions.pdf

I noted which parents had signed the syllabus and gave them back to students to take home. If yours did not make it back, here is a permalink to the document.

Week 1

Good day to you! We are going to slide into social studies as the 2015-2016 gets underway. As seventh graders I am sure you know your way around but might be surprised at the some of your new classmates. Remember that each day is a new one that can be even greater than the last with a positive attitude and outlook. This week will be spent getting to know each other, setting personal and academic goals, going over expectations and schedules, and taking a close look at personal learning styles and strategies to improve academic success.
