Sept. 14 - 18, 2015

Week 6:
The grading period is quickly progressing.
Friday we completed activities dedicated to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorism attacks. The site is permanent and I encourage everyone to visit and explore more than we had time for in class: http://www.911memorial.org
Because of the activity, the scheduled test was put off and will be held Thursday. It will include 12 new vocabulary words, religion/governments/economics of the Middle East, and as much of the area's history as we manage to cover through Wednesday.

Opening:
Monday: New vocabulary recorded on notecards.
Tuesday: Students will practice new vocabulary by themselves for five minutes and with a partner for five minutes.
Wednesday: We will use random picker to keep students engaged and play review basketball game or Around the World to prepare for Thursday's vocabulary section of the test.
Thursday: We will spend the first half of class reviewing previous information and chapter question answers.
Friday: Reading Across Curriculum activities KWL on subject of the day.

Work Periods:
Monday new vocabulary words will be introduced including: Imperialism, Nationalism, Federal, Unitary, Confederation, Monarchy, and Theocracy. Students will create flashcards to study by themselves/with partner.
Review Group will work with teacher to revisit troubled spots based on previous test scores. We will go back over 24 questions in Chapter 16, use Religion Chart and discuss any test questions students still do not understand.
Enrichment Group will read Fight For Equal Rights (Enrichment page 9) and provide written response on the following questions:
1) How would you feel if you had limited rights like the women in the Middle East?
2) How would your daily life be different?
3) What is a burqa? Why do you women have to wear them? Do you think it is fair that women in the Middle East must wear a burqa?
4) Explain the positive aspects of women being dressed in burqas. Explain the negative aspects of women dressing in burqas. How would your life be different if you had to wear a burqa?
Create a crossword puzzle using any 10 vocabulary words with the definitions as clues. On a separate sheet of paper include the key.

Tuesday: Students will practice new vocabulary by themselves for five minutes and with a partner for five minutes.
We will read Chapter 17 covering SS7CG4/SS7CG5 Government/Civic Understandings together and review Government Chart we completed last week. Students will complete three sets of questions from chapter as we read as a progress monitoring assessment and to check for understanding.

Wednesday: We will read Chapter 18 covering SS7E5/SS7E5a/SS7E5b on Economic Understandings. Students will complete four sets of questions as progress monitoring assessment and to check for understanding.
We will use random picker to keep students engaged and play review basketball game or Around the World to prepare for Thursday's vocabulary section of the test. We will do classroom review for government/religion/economic understandings either in game form or with Senteos depending on productivity of the particular group of students.

Thursday: We will spend the first half of class reviewing previous information and chapter question answers. Enrichment activity may be used depending upon percentage of students who answered questions correctly. Second half of class will be devoted to assessment over government/religion/economic understandings and vocabulary.

Friday: We will read a non-fiction story together about teenagers working in sweatshops in Asia and students will provide written responses to issues raised.
**CHANGED**
Some students had difficulty with Thursday's test. Students were given back graded test, told to write down questions they missed on notebook paper and use book, notes, and handouts to find correct answers. Once they did so and turned it in, they were given a second opportunity to take the test. I used the higher of the two scores.

Closing: Each day we will watch CNN Student News and discuss current events as time allows.

ELT: Students are able to reassess during Extended Learning Time (ELT) and before school. If a student fails a test a sticker/stamp is placed on test asking for a parent signature and listing the date any reassessment must be completed by (please see Reassessment Form and contact me for any additional information). Students must complete with 100 percent accuracy any prior Progress Monitoring assignments and the failed test in order to reassess within the two-week window. Please visit the Running Record page to see list of assignments/dates leading up to any particular test.

During ELT we will be studying economics/personal finance by playing a stock market game.

Assessments/Differentiation: Students will complete several assessments/checks for understanding throughout the week on vocabulary and new information as it is presented. This information will then be used to determine what information needs more practice and which students will be placed in a review group to work directly with teacher to receive individual attention/partnered practice/small groupings to increase comprehension, understanding and hopefully retention. Low test scores correlate to the amount of time necessary for study; what we are able to do in class may not be enough and should be adjusted accordingly. Materials used in class are found on this website and books may be borrowed each night to use at home. Please contact me if I can assist in any way.
