I look back very fondly on my middle school years and hope you will enjoy each moment, make memories, and have the confidence to try new things.
Our first week and a half will be filled with activities designed to help me learn about you. The first two days we will play name games so I can try to overcome my personal challenges of learning 100 new names. You will fill out questionnaires, share what answers you like, and meet new classmates while reinvigorating old friendships.
The third day will be spent taking a Social Studies pre-test based on seventh grade standards. The same test will be given again as an end of course test to see if growth was made during the 2016-17 school year.
Next week we will be reviewing geography skills by using an atlas textbook and supplemental materials to learn about latitude and longitude, different types of maps and legends used, and touch on the history of cartography (map making.) Before there was GPS and electronic assistants, map reading was a valuable and required skill all parents had to possess. I see the need to teach and practice map reading just in case the cellular signal drops in the middle of nowhere!
Please look around and see what we did last year while it is visible. I try to put as much information, handouts, notes, and other classroom materials as I can on this website for students to use and access outside of class. I am constantly exploring new technology and software all the time to make my website the best it can be and provide cutting-edge tools to help students practice, learn and succeed in seventh grade Social Studies. Over the next couple of weeks I will try to highlight different features and materials available on my site.
Please sign up for Remind, a two-way communication text and email application that allows for quick and easy contact between students, parents and teachers. Note that I have a code for each block (First through Fourth) so make sure you sign up with the correct code. The questions are created from information just covered in the book (three to four paragraphs usually.) Students were able to look back in the text for the answers. A 4 = 90 - 100 percent; 3 = 80 - 89 percent; 2 = 70 - 79 percent; and 1 = 69 percent or less. This information was then used to create the weekly test, and I noticed the expected correlation between progress monitoring scores and test scores.
To differentiate instruction this week, students who do not get 80 percent or greater when answering the questions will do them again the following day and I will be working with them individually as they do so. Friday tests will be returned. If time allows, reassessment process will be explained, if not it will be completed the next day (see Tuesday notes.)
Tuesday: All students can reassess if they did not receive 100 percent on Friday’s test. Those who did not pass will receive a sticker on their test asking for a parent signature and a date two weeks away by which the reassessment must be taken (Sept. 4.) When students bring the signature back, they will then be given a form which lists steps to reassess. For the most part they must turn in any progress monitoring activities leading up to the test with 100 percent accuracy (we go over these answers in class together), and the original test with all answers corrected. Other activities may be required depending upon complexity of unit. This form will require a parent to sign off that the work has been completed. Students can reassess before school and during ELT but must complete the activity within the two-week window. If they fail a second time, they may try once more.

Opening each day:
CNN News
Work Period:
Tuesday: New vocabulary words written on notecards: Geography, unequal distribution, Suez Canal, monotheism, Sunni, Shia.
