Sept. 21 - 25, 2015

Week 7:
Teacher’s note: Last week I used chapter questions we answered as we read the text and took notes together as progress monitoring grades. The questions are created from information just covered in the book (three to four paragraphs usually.) Students were able to look back in the text for the answers. A 4 = 90 - 100 percent; 3 = 80 - 89 percent; 2 = 70 - 79 percent; and 1 = 69 percent or less. This information was then used to create the weekly test, and I noticed the expected correlation between progress monitoring scores and test scores.
To differentiate instruction this week, students who do not get 80 percent or greater when answering the questions will do them again the following day and I will be working with them individually as they do so. Hopefully we will see an improvement and an increase in test scores. Those who do well can use that class time to finish a
crossword puzzle created from new material that will be due Thursday.

Opening:
Monday: New vocabulary recorded on notecards.
Tuesday - Thursday: Differentiated instruction - see note above
Friday: New vocabulary recorded on notecards.

Work Periods:
Monday new vocabulary words will be introduced including: Trade barriers, Tariffs, Quotas, Trade Embargoes, Currency, Foreign exchange, Gross Domestic Product, Human capital, Capital, Entrepreneurship.
Students will create flashcards to study by themselves/with partner. Please see vocabulary section of Class Notebook.
Tuesday: Students will practice new vocabulary by themselves for five minutes and take a clicker quiz. Those who score 100 percent will receive a Rambler Pride Card and be able to opt out of vocabulary practice and complete enrichment activities each day.
We will read
Chapter 19 covering SS7CG4/SS7CG5 Government/Civic Understandings together and review Government Chart we completed last week. Students will complete three sets of questions from chapter as we read as a progress monitoring assessment and to check for understanding.

Wednesday: Students will practice new vocabulary by themselves for five minutes and take a clicker quiz. Those who score 100 percent will receive a Rambler Pride Card and be able to opt out of vocabulary practice and complete enrichment activities each day.
We will read
Chapter 20 covering SSS7E7 a - d focusing on Economic Growth in Israel, Saudi Arabia and Iran. Students will complete questions from text as progress monitoring assessment and to check for understanding.

Thursday: We will spend the first half of class reviewing previous information and chapter question answers. Enrichment activity may be used depending upon percentage of students who answered questions correctly. Second half of class will be devoted to assessment over economic understandings and vocabulary.

Friday: We will read a non-fiction story together about teenagers working in sweatshops in Asia and students will provide written responses to issues raised. If that particular text is not available, another will be used.

Closing: Each day we will watch CNN Student News and discuss current events as time allows.

ELT: Students are able to reassess during Extended Learning Time (ELT) and before school. If a student fails a test a sticker/stamp is placed on test asking for a parent signature and listing the date any reassessment must be completed by (please see Reassessment Form and contact me for any additional information). Students must complete with 100 percent accuracy any prior Progress Monitoring assignments and the failed test in order to reassess within the two-week window. Please visit the Running Record page to see list of assignments/dates leading up to any particular test.

During ELT we will be studying economics/personal finance by playing a stock market game.

Assessments/Differentiation: Students will complete several assessments/checks for understanding throughout the week on vocabulary and new information as it is presented. This information will then be used to determine what information needs more practice and which students will be placed in a review group to work directly with teacher to receive individual attention/partnered practice/small groupings to increase comprehension, understanding and hopefully retention. Low test scores correlate to the amount of time necessary for study; what we are able to do in class may not be enough and should be adjusted accordingly. Materials used in class are found on this website and books may be borrowed each night to use at home. Please contact me if I can assist in any way.
