Week 2: Aug. 17 – 21

Greetings: Last week we played some “getting to know you” games and applied for jobs related to a Stock Market game we will be playing during Extended Learning Time (ELT) each week. I also discussed the Remind code to receive text message reminders (or email reminders) about upcoming due dates. Many students are familiar with this and many parents like to join as well. I am also reviewing Google Classroom and will likely switch over to that in the next few weeks. More details to come.
And one last thing – thanks to all students who provided suggestions on how to make Social Studies more enjoyable by noting things done in previous classes. I will be meeting with the sixth grade teachers to find out more about various games mentioned to review vocabulary and geography and try to incorporate some into our class. Several of the same games were mentioned by many students.
Week 2: Middle East Geography/Vocabulary
Each day we will use the first 10 minutes to watch CNN Student News. We will discuss the events, share personal connections, answer questions or research information presented, and have occasional quizzes and related assessments used as progress monitoring data related to the program.
Essential Question: How does Middle East geography affect people in that part of the world?
Monday- New Quizlet vocabulary (search for Conley or use this url to join: https://quizlet.com/join/eKa8BAcCH). Terms for Vocabulary 1: Ethnic group, religious group, irrigation, desalinization, agriculture, nomadic, OPEC, arid. Students will use notecards to record term and definition and use as a study aid.
Tuesday- Word wall drawing
Wednesday- Study for geography test.
Thursday- Study vocabulary with a partner
Friday- Study for vocabulary quiz (May be pushed back)
Work Period
Monday- Middle East geography review
Tuesday- Reading/quick quiz/review basketball
Wednesday- Complete second Learning Style self assessment and discuss findings, address questions, discuss strategies students can use to improve short term and long term memory armed with this knowledge.
Thursday- National Geographic Reading Expeditions: World Regions, guided reading and questions. Key concepts: unequal distribution, role of OPEC
Friday-Vocabulary quiz using Senteo clickers (if available). Geography Test; continue with geography reading. Depending upon progress, some classes will compare and contrast ethnic groups and religious groups using double bubble thinking map. Introduce 3 monotheistic religions.

Summary and questions Quick quiz ticket out the door Agenda: buy index cards, get syllabus signed, study maps and flashcards.

Mr. Stewart will pull students out for extra help on identifying political and physical features on a map and new vocabulary
