Week 13:
Focus This Week: SS7G12 The student will analyze the diverse cultures of the people who live in Southern and Eastern Asia.
a. Explain the differences between an ethnic group and a religious group.
b. Compare and contrast the prominent religions in Southern and Eastern Asia: Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Shintoism and the philosophy of Confucianism.
c. Evaluate how the literacy rate affects the standard of living.
Opening:
Monday: New vocabulary recorded on notecards.
Tuesday - Thursday: Differentiated instruction, see notes below.
Friday: Review with a partner for test.
Work Periods:
Monday: New vocabulary words List 10 will be introduced focusing on religions: Enlightenment, Reincarnation, Karma, Kami, Vedas, Nirvana, Moksha, Tripitaka. Students will create flashcards to study by themselves/with partner. Please see vocabulary section of Class Notebook on this website to find lists of words and definitions.
Because of Friday's field trip, we are going to spend today reviewing test and chapter questions. Students will be using ELT this week to reassess on test if they had a score of 74 or below.
I will intersperse instruction with short videos featuring religious/culture topics related to Asia throughout the week.
Tuesday: Students will practice new vocabulary by themselves for five minutes, five minutes with a partner, and then take a practice quiz. Those who score 100 percent will receive a Rambler Pride Card and be able to opt out of vocabulary practice and complete enrichment activities each day. We will read Chapter 27 from the Student Workbook together and students will complete questions from chapters in clickers as we move through chapter. Results are used as progress monitoring grades and as checks for understanding for differentiated instruction. We will finish and uncompleted work from previous day related to geography.
Wednesday: Students will practice new vocabulary by themselves for five minutes and take a clicker quiz. Those who score 100 percent will receive a Rambler Pride Card and be able to opt out of vocabulary practice and complete enrichment activities each day. We will finish and uncompleted work from Chapter 27 related to religion.
Thursday: Students will take a practice quiz on Edmodo. Students will then complete a graphic organizer from a web quest on Asia religions. Additional time will be devoted to working on projects.
Friday: Students will take a quiz on Edmond. Students will then complete a graphic organizer from a web quest on Asia religions. Additional time will be devoted to working on projects.
Closing: Each day we will watch CNN Student News and discuss current events as time allows.
ELT: Students are able to reassess during Extended Learning Time (ELT) and before school. If a student fails a test a stamp is placed on test asking for a parent signature and listing the date any reassessment must be completed by (please see Reassessment Form and contact me for any additional information). Students must complete with 100 percent accuracy any prior Progress Monitoring assignments and the failed test in order to reassess within the two-week window. Please visit the Running Record page to see list of assignments/dates leading up to any particular test.

During ELT we will be studying economics/personal finance by playing a stock market game.
Assessments/Differentiation: Students will complete several assessments/checks for understanding throughout the week on vocabulary and new information as it is presented. This information will then be used to determine what information needs more practice and which students will be placed in a review group to work directly with teacher to receive individual attention/partnered practice/small groupings to increase comprehension, understanding and hopefully retention. Low test scores correlate to the amount of time necessary for study; what we are able to do in class may not be enough and should be adjusted accordingly. Materials used in class are found on this website and books may be borrowed each night to use at home. Please contact me if I can assist in any way.
